“Megan's classroom is a safe space where students can express themselves freely, make mistakes without fear of judgment, and learn at their own pace.”

-Joy McKarns

Megan McKarns, a 5th-grade teacher at the Dayton Public School New International School, is a beacon of hope for newly immigrated students struggling to adjust to their new surroundings. With a class of 24 students who speak nine different languages, Megan goes above and beyond to ensure that they not only learn the 5th-grade curriculum but also gain the necessary English language and cultural skills to transition into a regular classroom. Megan creates an environment that supports the whole child and mastery of learning. She understands that learning is not limited to textbooks and tests but encompasses many experiences that enable children to grow and develop into well-rounded individuals. Recently, they ran the bases at the Dayton Dragons Stadium after climbing all over a fire truck. She encourages her students to explore their interests, express themselves creatively, and develop a strong sense of identity.

Megan's classroom is a safe space where students can express themselves freely, make mistakes without fear of judgment, and learn at their own pace. Megan designs student-centered learning experiences tailored to her students' unique needs. She recognizes that each child comes from a different background and has different learning styles and cultural experiences, so she creates engaging and meaningful activities. Megan is fluent in Spanish, and through her degree and study of a foreign language, she understands the learning challenges of mastering a new language. Megan uses various teaching techniques, such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and group work, to make learning interactive and fun. Her lessons are designed to challenge her students' thinking, encourage critical analysis, and develop problem-solving skills.

Megan has instilled in her students in a love for learning, a sense of community, and a belief in themselves.

Megan celebrates both accomplishments and everyday discoveries as her students learn about their new home. She recognizes that every achievement, no matter how small, is a step forward. Megan creates opportunities for her students to showcase their talents and share their cultures with others. She encourages them to celebrate their achievements and take pride in their accomplishments. She is in constant contact with parents and invites them to partner with her as an essential part of their students' education. Megan's impact on her students is immeasurable. She has not only helped them to learn the 5th-grade curriculum but has also provided them with the necessary tools to succeed in their new environment. She has instilled in them a love for learning, a sense of community, and a belief in themselves. She found the funds and is taking them on a Dayton History field trip to help them connect with their new home. Megan has made a profound difference in her students' lives and has inspired them to reach for their dreams.

In conclusion, Megan McKarns is a deserving candidate for an honored teacher award. Her dedication, passion, and commitment to her students have made her an invaluable asset to the Dayton Public School New International School. Megan's ability to create an environment that supports the whole child and mastery of learning, design student-centered learning experiences, and celebrate accomplishments is a testament to her exceptional teaching skills.

Megan is a shining example of what it means to be an outstanding teacher and a true champion for children.

Teachers Honor Teachers

The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation launched a new program last fall inviting teachers to recognize a colleague they know is doing exceptional work in the classroom.

In the above post, Joy McKarns expresses her admiration for fellow teacher, Megan McKarns. Thank you to both educators for your dedication to students and for taking the time to showcase what it means to deliver challenging, innovative, and student-centered lessons that result in powerful and deep learning.

Through the Teachers Honor Teachers Program, The Foundation is seeking Ohio public school teachers to share great things about a teaching colleague in an Ohio public school that ensures deep learning for students. If we choose to post your story, we will award $500 toward that teacher's classroom for their great work and $500 toward your classroom for honoring their excellence. Apply here.
