The Joy of Learning - Teachers Honor Teachers

Bill Metcalf designed a “Sports Physics” lab to teach high level science concepts at STEM High School in Akron.

“Bill understands that a successful educational journey involves more than just completing assignments; it's about embracing the joy of learning.”

In the realm of teaching excellence, Bill Metcalf stands as a shining example of a dedicated educator who goes above and beyond to inspire his high school students in a lottery-based STEM school. He excels in creating an environment that nurtures the whole child while fostering mastery of learning.

The STEM motto of "all learners can learn" extends into what usually is an elite high school course: Physics. "Coach" Metcalf uses innovative approaches to engage and motivate students from various math and science levels.

Bill's commitment to teaching excellence begins with creating a classroom environment that sets the stage for his students to excel. He meticulously designs student-centered learning experiences that engage his pupils in active problem-solving. One standout example is his "Sports Physics" lab, where he ingeniously uses sports to teach key physics concepts. Under his guidance, students learn the scientific principles and the practical application of physics in real-life scenarios.

In one innovative lesson, he introduces learners to the proper technique of throwing a "punch." It's not just about the physical act; it's about understanding the physics behind it. A poster-sized graph paper is laid underneath the punching bag, and a camera on an iPad captures each punch. Bill's students witness their movements transformed into data right before their eyes, an enthralling marriage of science and sports.

His adept use of data sets Bill apart from many of his peers. He doesn't just collect it; he engages his students in its analysis. In the Sports Physics lesson, the data from punch motions becomes a springboard for discussions and problem-solving, deepening the students' understanding of the material.

Models, critique, and descriptive feedback are integral to Bill's pedagogy. He encourages his students to learn from their successes and failures, promoting a growth mindset. By providing constructive criticism and guidance, he instills a sense of continuous improvement and self-assessment in his learners.

Bill’s commitment to meaningful celebrations is perhaps his most inspiring trait. He understands that a successful educational journey involves more than just completing assignments; it's about embracing the joy of learning. He doesn't just teach his students; he gives them opportunities to showcase their newfound knowledge through projects, presentations, and creative demonstrations.

Incorporating the Physics Standards seamlessly into his curriculum, Bill's approach to education is a testament to the modern educator's potential. By blending sports, physics, and mathematics, he engages students in hands-on learning that has a lasting impact. His dedication to creating a holistic educational experience, while simultaneously nurturing mastery of knowledge, sets him apart as an excellent teacher.

Through his innovative methods and unwavering commitment, Bill empowers his students to explore, question, and, most importantly, embrace the ever-evolving world of science.

Teachers Honor Teachers

The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation launched a new program in fall 2022 inviting teachers to recognize a colleague they know is doing exceptional work in the classroom.

In the above post, Katie Metcalf expresses her admiration for fellow teacher, Bill Metcalf. Thank you to both educators for your dedication to students and for taking the time to showcase what it means to deliver challenging, innovative, and student-centered lessons that result in powerful and deep learning.

Through the Teachers Honor Teachers Program, The Foundation is seeking Ohio public school teachers to share great things about a teaching colleague in an Ohio public school that ensures deep learning for students. If we choose to post your story, we will award $500 toward that teacher's classroom for their great work and $500 toward your classroom for honoring their excellence. Apply here.
