This past summer the Jennings Foundation sponsored workshops to re-energize Ohio’s mathematics and science teachers. The separate sessions were filled with practical strategies that teachers can incorporate immediately in their classrooms. Each workshop attracted educators from across the state.
Gene Easter led the science workshop in partnership with his wife, Linda. Mr. Easter has been a science educator for more than 40 years, maintaining a dual career most of his professional life as both a high school physics and chemistry teacher and a science methods instructor.
The mathematics workshop, for teachers of grades 5-8, was presented by Jeff Wanko, Associate Professor of Teacher Education, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Dr. Wanko is a former middle school mathematics teacher who taught grades 7-8 in the Kings Local School District near Cincinnati. He completed a doctorate at Michigan State University, where he worked on the development of the Connected Mathematics Project – a middle school mathematics curriculum.
